"Sec. 3301.96. (A) It is the intent of the general assembly to recognize the importance of recess and physical activity for the mental, physical, behavioral, emotional, and academic well-being of students. The general assembly encourages school districts to create additional opportunities for recess or student movement when classroom instructional requirements can still be accomplished.

(B) The department of education and workforce may develop and distribute best practices about, and distribute examples from school districts statewide that successfully provide, additional recess or movement opportunities while maintaining academic performance and instructional time.

(C) The department shall identify voluntary programs, statewide initiatives, and partnerships that support student physical education and other mental and physical health and well-being behaviors. The department shall disseminate this information to school districts statewide."

SYNOPSIS

Student recess time

R.C. 3301.96; 3313.6025, 3314.03, 3326.11, and 3328.24 (removed)

Eliminates the requirement for public schools to provide 30 minutes of recess twice each day for students in grades K-8.

Expresses the General Assembly's intent to recognize the importance of recess and physical activity for the mental, physical, behavioral, emotional, and academic well-being of students and encourage school districts to create additional opportunities for recess or student movement when classroom instructional requirements can still be accomplished.

Permits the Department of Education and Workforce to develop and distribute to school districts best practices for providing additional recess or movement opportunities for students and distribute examples of districts that do so.

Requires the Department to identify and distribute to school districts voluntary programs, statewide initiatives, and partnerships that support student physical education and other mental and physical health and well-being behaviors.
