SYNOPSIS

Alternative certifying organizations

R.C. 3702.3013 and 3727.26

Revises as follows the substitute bill's provisions governing the Medical Board and ODH Director's approval of alternative certifying organizations for surgical assistants (SAs) and surgical technologists (STs):

--In the case of an alternative SA certifying organization, requires the organization to meet both of the following conditions: (1) have SA educational standards that are equivalent to those of SA educational programs accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) and (2) have certification standards that are equivalent to those of SA certification programs accredited by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA). (The current version addresses only CAAHEP educational standards.)

--In the case of an alternative ST certifying organization, requires the organization to meet both of the following conditions: (1) have ST educational standards that are equivalent to those of ST educational programs accredited by CAAHEP and (2) have ST certification standards that are equivalent to those of ST certification programs accredited by NCCA. (The current version does not establish any conditions on the Board and Director's approval of alternative ST certifying organizations.)

120 hands-on surgical cases

Revises the substitute bill's provision requiring an ST who is employed based on being certified to have completed 120 surgical cases, by specifying that the cases also must be hands-on.
