A R E S O L U T I O N

Honoring Van Chambers for heroism.

WHEREAS, The members of the Senate of the 132nd General Assembly of Ohio are pleased to extend special recognition to Van Chambers for the heroic efforts he displayed in defusing a potentially tragic situation at Columbus Scioto 6-12; and

WHEREAS, A jobs-readiness counselor at Columbus Scioto 6-12, Van Chambers is a remarkable individual, and he has displayed an exceptional presence of mind and a degree of compassion of which he can be proud. On September 8, 2017, he witnessed one of his students discharge a firearm within the school building, and in the face of grave risk, Mr. Chambers was able to establish a dialog that convinced the shooter to hand over the gun and surrender to police without further incident; and

WHEREAS, At a time when many people are content to take a passive role in life, Van Chambers has willingly involved himself in helping others through his work with countless students, and his efforts demonstrate an exemplary combination of humanitarian concern and commitment as well as selfless initiative. His actions merit the esteem of the entire community and have distinguished him as a truly responsible citizen; and

WHEREAS, Van Chambers’ character serves as a reminder that altruistic behavior is not a thing of the past but is a value that is exhibited in daily life by individuals such as he. His unflinching composure in the face of danger prevented a perilous situation from becoming tragic, and he is deserving of high praise; therefore be it

RESOLVED, That we, the members of the Senate of the 132nd General Assembly of Ohio, in adopting this Resolution, commend Van Chambers for his heroism and salute him as an outstanding Ohioan; and be it further

RESOLVED, That the Clerk of the Senate transmit a duly authenticated copy of this Resolution to Van Chambers.
