A R E S O L U T I O N

Honoring Brutus Buckeye as the 2019 Universal Cheerleader’s Association D1A Mascot National Champion

WHEREAS, The members of the Senate of the 133rd General Assembly of Ohio are pleased to commend Brutus Buckeye on receiving the 2019 D1A Mascot National Championship title from the Universal Cheerleader’s Association; and

WHEREAS, This prestigious distinction is a fitting tribute to Brutus Buckeye, for the beloved mascot of The Ohio State University was selected as this year’s D1A Mascot National Champion by the Universal Cheerleader’s Association for its remarkable video application that demonstrated such qualities as crowd appeal and creativity. This accomplishment is a justifiable source of pride and an excellent reflection not only on the school itself but also on its students, faculty, staff, and alumni; and

WHEREAS, Seeing the need for a mascot, students Ray Bourhis and Sally Huber created a large smiling buckeye nut with human legs, and it was officially named Brutus Buckeye on November 21, 1965. Since its inception, this cherished figure has motivated countless fans, and it has perpetuated a proud, rich tradition of support and encouragement for the school’s athletic teams; and

WHEREAS, Every successful athletic program is made possible through the efforts of countless individuals who work hard every day of the season just as the players do, but who do not capture the spotlight and the glory. All those who have carried the mantle of Brutus Buckeye have done a great service to The Ohio State University, for they have delighted fans with their exuberant energy and colorful antics, and they have established a standard of excellence that has endured for more than fifty years; therefore be it

RESOLVED, That we, the members of the Senate of the 133rd General Assembly of Ohio, in adopting this Resolution, applaud Brutus Buckeye on its recent accolade and salute it as one of the nation’s most endearing mascots; and be it further

RESOLVED, That the Clerk of the Senate transmit duly authenticated copies of this Resolution to The Ohio State University and to the news media of Ohio.
