To condemn President Trump's issuance of pardons and commutations for individuals convicted in connection with the January 6, 2021, insurrection at the United States Capitol, including those who committed violent acts against law enforcement officers.
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF OHIO (THE SENATE CONCURRING):
WHEREAS, President Donald Trump recently issued more than one thousand five hundred pardons and commuted the sentences of fourteen individuals in connection with the attack on the United States Capitol on January 6, 2021, when thousands stormed the historic building; and
WHEREAS, President Trump commuted the sentences of individuals who were convicted of seditious conspiracy. The President also issued "a full, complete and unconditional pardon to all other individuals convicted of offenses related to events that occurred at or near the United States Capitol on January 6, 2021." The group of pardoned individuals includes those who assaulted law enforcement officers; and
WHEREAS, The President by issuing those pardons became an advocate for unjustified vigilantism and the mistreatment and disrespect to the nation's police officers, including those who put their lives on the line to protect the nation's Capitol; and
WHEREAS, The United States is a country of democracy and justice and does not condone the actions of citizens who undermine government authority when they disagree with an election outcome. The attack on the Capitol ruined and interrupted a peaceful transfer of power and is a terrible addition to American history; now therefore be it
RESOLVED, That we, the members of the 136th General Assembly of the State of Ohio, fully disapprove of President Trump's actions and stand against his decision to pardon the criminals who stormed the United States Capitol and assaulted law enforcement officers; and be it further
RESOLVED, That the Clerk of the House of Representatives transmit duly authenticated copies of this resolution to the members of the Ohio Congressional delegation and the news media of Ohio.
